The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) is an intergovernmental organisation set up for the promotion of free trade and economic integration to the benefit of its four Member States Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The EFTA Secretariat provides services to the EFTA States and has offices in Geneva, Brussels and Luxemburg. The EFTA Headquarters in Geneva services the EFTA Council and supplies services for policy development, negotiations and implementation of free trade and cooperation agreements with countries outside the European Union. The Brussels office supports the management of the EEA Agreement. EFTA’s Luxembourg office contributes to the development of the European Statistical system.
The Economic Officer is part of the Secretary-General’s Office in Geneva, which services the EFTA Council and coordinates various horizontal activities in the Association.
The Economic Officer undertakes economic and trade policy analysis and produces quantitative and qualitative reports in support of trade-related activities. The Economic Officer processes data from internal and external sources and maintains the organisation’s trade data.
The Economic Officer drafts speaking notes, publications, and presentations. The successful candidate manages the collaboration with international organisations such as WTO and OECD on trade issues and carries out other related duties as required. The successful candidate may further be called upon to assist in free trade negotiations and in the maintenance of free trade agreements. Other tasks in the Secretariat may also be assigned.
Applicants must be nationals of one of the EFTA Member States (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland).
Fixed term three years. If considered desirable and in the organisation’s interest, an additional three-year contract may be offered.
